Director, Engineering

Position Summary:

The Director of Engineering is a senior technical leader responsible for guiding the architecture, development, and secure deployment of data platforms, clinical interoperability systems, and healthcare applications. This role combines hands-on engineering expertise with people leadership to support scalable and compliant solutions in cloud-native environments. The Director ensures delivery excellence through industry best practice coupled with agile engineering practices while closely collaborating with Project Management to align work across product and operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Translate organizational strategy into actionable engineering roadmaps and technical execution plans.
  • Define and track team-level OKRs aligned with strategic goals and technical milestones.
  • Lead sprint planning, backlog refinement, and technical ceremonies in collaboration with Scrum Masters and the Product and Project Managers.
  • Ensure agile best practices are embedded within engineering teams, promoting rapid iteration, technical excellence, and sustainable delivery.
  • Guide technical direction across cloud infrastructure, secure SDLC, DevSecOps pipelines, and scalable data systems.
  • Serve as an escalation point and thought leader across architectural decisions, secure development practices, and production readiness.
  • Ensure adoption of cloud-native solutions in AWS, including S3, Lambda, ECS/EKS, IAM, and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/CloudFormation).
  • Lead and mentor engineers across multiple disciplines (e.g., software development, DevSecOps, cloud/data engineering).
  • Hire, coach, and lead top team members. Provide regular and ongoing feedback, including performance management with direct reports.
  • Foster a culture of technical ownership, integrity, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee deployment pipelines, automation, and observability systems (e.g., logging, alerting, monitoring) to ensure system reliability.
  • Ensure engineering practices align with security, compliance, and privacy frameworks such as HIPAA, HITRUST, and the 21st Century Cures Act.
  • Maintain internal documentation and ensure audit-readiness of infrastructure, processes, and code repositories.
  • Lead development and hardening of clinical data pipelines including ingestion, transformation, and delivery.
  • Oversee adherence to healthcare standards such as FHIR, HL7 v2, SMART on FHIR, and patient identity matching algorithms.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to ensure effective and secure data exchange.
  • Assist with managing 3rd party contracts and/or agreements.
  • Partner with the Project Managers and Product Managers to ensure engineering delivery aligns with roadmap priorities and contract obligations.
  • Support state, payer, and vendor relationships by representing technical direction and ensuring quality deliverables.
  • Serve as a technical SME for internal teams and state engagements as needed.
  • Manage resources and business objectives in compliance with charter, policies, and standards.

Education, Experience & Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Health Informatics, or related field (Master’s degree strongly preferred).
  • 10+ years in engineering with demonstrated commitment to remaining abreast of new and emerging engineering technology and best practices.
  • 5+ years in engineering leadership, with responsibility over high-performing software, data, or cloud engineering teams. Ability to lead technical teams while maintaining high engineering standards and autonomy.
  • Experience delivering production systems in a healthcare or regulated data environment.
  • Expertise in AWS services (e.g., Lambda, ECS/EKS, RDS, IAM), containerization, and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/CloudFormation).
  • Strong understanding of secure SDLC, CI/CD pipelines, version control (Git), and testing frameworks.
  • Skilled in one or more languages such as Python, Java, or Golang and fluency with SQL and modern data tooling (e.g., dbt, Airflow).
  • Familiarity with healthcare data formats, APIs, identity resolution, and interoperability standards.
  • Strong communicator, able to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders effectively.
  • Skilled at balancing strategic focus with operational execution in an agile and evolving environment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-changing and sometimes ambiguous environment, identifying key priorities and driving new solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal/relationship management skills and team building skills.
  • Excellent mathematical, problem-solving, and analytical skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work on a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Hours are generally Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM. As operational deliverable deadlines emerge there will likely be extended working hours.
  • Light work requiring exertion up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Ability to work from La Vista, NE office with reliable and predictable attendance
